NAAWS 5.0 FAQs

NAAWS 5.0 Print 1

About NAAWS and the New Microsite

The North American Architectural Woodwork Standards (NAAWS) is the authoritative and collaboratively developed standard for architectural woodwork in North America. It defines criteria for material, workmanship, fabrication, tolerances, installation, and quality compliance for designers, manufacturers, installers, and specification writers. NAAWS is collaboratively developed by the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada (AWMAC) and the Woodwork Institute.

With NAAWS 5.0, the content is being delivered through a dedicated microsite to:

  • Improve navigation with interactive, web-native indexing and search features.
  • Support scalable and modular updates (sections can be updated independently).
  • Provide a better user experience across devices without relying solely on static PDFs.
  • Integrate dynamic tools, hyperlinks, and cross-references that enhance usability for all
    stakeholders.

The official effective date of NAAWS 5.0 is INSERT DATE HERE. All existing versions (e.g., 4.0) will remain available for reference.

Using the Microsite

Yes. Access to NAAWS 5.0 content will require users to create a login and a basic profile on the NAAWS microsite. This login requirement allows NAAWS to:

  • Provide secure, controlled access to the current edition of the Standards
  • Track usage and engagement to better support industry needs
  • Communicate important updates, notices, and errata directly to users
  • Support future enhancements such as saved searches, bookmarks, and personalized tools

NAAWS 5.0 is delivered through a dynamic microsite rather than a static document. Requiring user authentication supports the integrity of the Standards, enables controlled version management, and allows NAAWS to ensure users are always referencing the most current and authoritative content. This approach also aligns NAAWS with modern standards platforms used across the design and construction industry.

Content in NAAWS 5.0 is organized by major sections similar to NAAWS 4.0 (e.g., Fundamental Requirements, Product Sections, Installation, Tolerances) with intuitive navigation, linked glossary terms, embedded figures, and direct search results. These enhancements aim to make finding and interpreting standards faster than with static documents.

Yes. Although the primary delivery will be web-based, downloadable PDFs of the full standard will be available for offline use, reference, and printing.

About the Standard and Updates

NAAWS 5.0 represents the next evolution of the standards, incorporating industry feedback, new construction practices, updated tolerances, clarified definitions, and improved organization for user accessibility. It continues to reflect collaborative input from manufacturers, designers, inspectors, and other industry representatives. Additionally, NAAWS 5.0 has incorporated all errata updates to January 31, 2026.

Errata will be published annually to address clarifications, corrections, or minor updates identified through industry feedback or committee review. In addition, major editions of NAAWS will continue to be released on a five-year cycle, consistent with past practice. This structure balances stability for contractual use with the ability to address issues in a timely and transparent manner.

Updates to NAAWS content (e.g., corrections, additions, interpretations) will be published directly on the microsite as errata notices. Users will be able to track changes by date and section. Significant changes may also be announced via NAAWS mailing lists, partner association channels, and social media.

Yes. The NAAWS 5.0 microsite will include automatic language translation functionality to improve accessibility for a broader audience. However, automated translations are provided for convenience only. In case of dispute or interpretation misunderstanding, the original English version of NAAWS shall be considered the sole authoritative reference for any issue related to the Standards.

Feedback and Community Input

Users can submit suggestions through the Suggestions feature on the microsite. Feedback will be reviewed by the NAAWS Committee for consideration in future updates or errata.

Yes. Industry participation remains critical. Representatives from Associations, woodwork manufacturers, inspectors, and other stakeholders will continue to be invited to participate in review and development activities.

About the Standards in Practice

When specifying architectural woodwork, reference the effective edition (e.g., “Comply with NAAWS 5.0”) in any applicable specification sections of the contract documents. Guide specifications and templates may be provided to support proper referencing.

Yes. Guide specifications and additional tools (e.g., section templates, industry guidance) will be available on the microsite or partner association sites to support consistent use of the standards.

For projects underway that reference NAAWS 4.0, compliance with the edition in effect at the time of tender typically applies unless otherwise specified in contract documents. Transition guidance will be provided to help stakeholders understand how NAAWS 5.0 applies to ongoing and new projects.

Technical and Support Questions

Technical inquiries may be addressed through the microsite contact form or through regional association representatives (e.g., AWMAC chapters, Woodwork Institute). Questions may be routed to subject matter experts for clarification.

The microsite is designed for accessibility and optimized for desktop, tablet, and mobile use. Search, indexing, and web navigation tools aim to support efficient access to standards content across platforms.
